We also created a new masthead for our site featuring a photograph made at The Temple, Shatan, Beijing, by Lois Conner. See:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/introducing-the-tower-of-reading\/\">Introducing <em>The Tower of Readin<\/em>g<\/a>; and,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/the-temple-the-mastheads-of-china-heritage-2016-2024\/\">The Temple &amp; Mastheads of <em>China Heritage<\/em>, 2016-2024<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><em>China Heritage<\/em> marked\u00a0the Mid-Autumn and National Day holiday season of 2023, officially dubbed \u2018the dual festivities\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/health.people.com.cn\/n1\/2023\/0928\/c14739-40087207.html\">\u96d9\u7bc0<\/a>, with an essay from <em>The Tower of Reading<\/em> \u5538\u6a13 translated by <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/duncan-campbell-archive\/\">Duncan Campbell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We will continue to\u00a0publish a series of similar notes in the lead up to the official launch of <em>The Tower of Reading<\/em>, a project devoted to the work of Zhong Shuhe (<a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/item\/\u949f\u53d4\u6cb3\/3395047\">\u937e\u53d4\u6cb3<\/a>, 1931-), writer, editor, publisher and an old friend. The project focusses on Shuhe\u2019s collection \u5ff5\u6a13\u5b78\u77ed \u2014 \u2018Studying Short Works of Classical Chinese Prose in the Tower of Reading\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 1989, Zhong Shuhe, whose literary name is \u5ff5\u6a13 <em>ni\u00e0n l\u00f3u<\/em>, &#8216;The Tower of Reading\u2019, published over 500 columns in newspapers around China. Each featured an excerpt from a classical text, the earliest dating from the Warring States era (fifth to third centuries BCE). Drawing from thinkers, histories, famous collections of anecdotes and including a range of literary genres the excerpts were all 100 Chinese characters in length.
