To these Zhong appended &#8216;A\u00a0Comment from the Master of the Tower of Reading&#8217; \u5ff5\u6a13\u66f0 <em>ni\u00e0n l\u00f3u yu\u0113<\/em>, &#8216;casual essays&#8217; \u2014 \u5c0f\u54c1\u6587 <em>xi\u01ceop\u01d0nw\u00e9n<\/em> or \u96dc\u6587 <em>z\u00e1w\u00e9n<\/em>, modern terms for such works, akin to the traditional terms \u7b46\u8a18 <em>b\u01d0 j\u00ec<\/em>, &#8216;jottings&#8217; or \u5284\u8a18 <em>zh\u00e1 j\u00ec<\/em>, &#8216;miscellaneous literary notes&#8217; \u2014 that expanded on the theme of the chosen text, or a particular historical figure or a particular incident. In these musings Zhong wryly remarks on human foibles, offers readers short meditative passages, reflections and\u00a0amusing aper\u00e7u.\u00a0For the most part, they reflect on his experiences during the Mao era when, like so many other men and women of letters, he had been persecuted, although his often acerbic comments also touch on contemporary life. Taken together, Zhong&#8217;s essay-commentaries offer a wry account of modern Chinese culture, thought and society.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly three decades, from 1991 to 2020, Zhong Shuhe published hundreds of essays that drew upon the vast corpus of China&#8217;s written tradition. Each essay took as its theme a short classical text no more than 100 Chinese characters in length which Zhong then translated and interpreted for modern readers. In a foreword to a selection of the essays dated 4 June 2002, Zhong described his three-part approach in the following way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u5b78\u5176\u77ed\u00a0<em>xu\u00e9 q\u00ed\u00a0du\u01cen<\/em>\u00a0is &#8216;the selection and study of short works by the ancients&#8217; \u5b78\u7684\u662f\u53e4\u4eba\u7684\u6587\u7ae0;<\/li>\n<li>\u5ff5\u6a13\u8b80 <em>ni\u00e0n l\u00f3u d\u00fa<\/em>\u00a0offers &#8216;my reading [translation] of the selected text in modern Chinese&#8217; \u6211\u5c0d\u53e4\u4eba\u6587\u7ae0\u7684\u300c\u8b80\u300d\u6cd5; and,<\/li>\n<li>\u5ff5\u6a13\u66f0 <em>ni\u00e0n l\u00f3u yu\u0113<\/em>, an impromptu commentary, &#8216;remarks for the diversion of my readers for which I, rather than the ancients, am solely responsible&#8217; \u518d\u501f\u984c\u300c\u66f0\u300d \u4e0a\u5e7e\u53e5\uff0c\u53ea\u80fd\u7d66\u60f3\u770b\u7684\u4eba\u770b\u770b\uff0c\u6587\u8cac\u81ea\u8ca0\uff0c\u4e0d\u80fd\u8b93\u53e4\u4eba\u66ff\u6211\u8ca0\u8cac\u3002<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>[<em>Note<\/em>: For an example of this format and Zhong Shuhe&#8217;s style, see <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/mid-autumn-festival-2023\/\">The Same Fair Moon \u5343\u91cc\u5171\u5b0b\u5a1f<\/a>,\u00a029 September 2023.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>Zhong&#8217;s Tower of Reading is constructed from divers sources, ranging from the first millennium BCE to the late-nineteenth century. They include the writings of thinkers like Confucius, Mencius and Zhuangzi, canonical historical material, both formal and casual literary compositions from famous writers, including Su Shi, Han Yu and Zhang Dai, as well as selections from various genres of writing, such as introductions, letters and informal notes. The process of selection overlaps with a tradition in Chinese letters summed up in the expression \u6587\u53f2\u54f2\u00a0<em>w\u00e9n-sh\u01d0-zh\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 the literary, historical and philosophical tradition \u2014 a familiarity with which equips students, be they Chinese or not, with a basic appreciation of the kind of\u00a0\u2018comprehensive knowledge\u2019 that is so deeply admired in China. In this, <em>The Tower of Reading<\/em>\u00a0in approach, temper and style, chimes with our own advocacy of <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/read-read-read-listen-listen-listen-its-never-too-late-to-learn-modern-and-literary-chinese\/\">New Sinology<\/a> (for more on this, see <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/jao-tsung-i-on-\u901a-tong-\u9952\u5b97\u9824\u8207\u901a\u4eba\/\">Jao Tsung-I on \u901a <em>t\u014dng<\/em> \u2014 \u9952\u5b97\u9824\u8207\u901a\u4eba<\/a>; and, <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/china-watching-in-the-xi-jinping-era-of-blindness-and-deafness\/\">China Watching in the Xi Jinping Era of Blindness and Deafness<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Taken as a whole, <em>The Tower of Reading <\/em>is also something of a commentary on China, one written by a litt\u00e9rateur imbued both by the ethos of China&#8217;s dual enlightenments (1917-1927 and 1977-1989) and the long tradition of what Republican-era writers like Zhou Zuoren and Lin Yutang championed as Chinese humanism. Through his translations, Zhong Shuhe helps readers appreciate the texts he has selected, writing that is more often than not in a terse telegraphic style that can easily elude the modern reader. In his commentaries, Zhong reflects on his own life and addresses a future that, as he hints between the lines, promises to be less ideologically hidebound than the present.<\/p>\n<p>Although the short classical texts that Zhong selected are at the heart of the series, his commentaries, written in the tradition of the best modern essayists, are also a singular achievement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><em>The Tower of Reading<\/em> series itself replicates in a modest way the efforts of Zhong Shuhe who, from his\u00a0elevated perspective, both literally and metaphorically, has surveyed a corpus of China&#8217;s recorded tradition and selected short prose pieces. The embracing view from The Tower of Reading is in stark contrast to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/the-view-from-maple-bridge-ah-humanity\/\"><em>The View from Maple Bridge<\/em><\/a>, a four-part chapter in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/xi-jinpings-empire-of-tedium\/\"><em>Xi Jinping&#8217;s Empire of Tedium<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This introduction is paired with &#8216;Intersecting with Eternity&#8217;, itself a selection of works that reflect our own understanding of the fragile skein between ideas, sentiment, literature and us. <em>The Tower of Reading<\/em>\u00a0is nothing less than a laissez-passer into the <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/the-invisible-republic-of-the-spirit-preface-to-spectres-souls\/\">Invisible Republic of the Spirit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Tower of Reading<\/em> is a stand-alone section in <i>China\u00a0Heritage<\/i>\u00a0listed under <em>Topics<\/em> in the Menu Bar.\u00a0Some of its contents will also feature both in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/lessons-in-new-sinology\/\"><em>Lessons in New Sinology<\/em><\/a> and in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/the-other-china\/\"><em>The Other China<\/em><\/a>. Although the focus of the series will be on Zhong Shuhe&#8217;s work, other essays, translations and artwork that relate to the theme of reading and thinking through time will also be included.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>In late 2014, I bought a small two-volume selection of Zhong Shuhe&#8217;s a selection of <em>Short Classical Texts from The Tower of Reading<\/em> \u5ff5\u6a13\u5b78\u77ed titled <em>Read Ancient Books with Me<\/em> \u5e36\u4f60\u8b80\u53e4\u66f8 in Beijing. Taking advantage of a lull between chemo- and radio-therapy following cancer surgery earlier in the year, I had gone to Beijing to see friends, buy books and enjoy what I thought would most probably be my last trip to a city where I come to study forty years earlier. Reading Shuhe&#8217;s selected classical texts and his sardonic essays, I decided that if I survived the cure of my illness, I would turn my attention to this unpretentious yet unique work.<\/p>\n<p>After quitting academia in late 2015, my energies were focussed instead on moving to New Zealand and launching <em>China Heritage<\/em>. Then, in 2021, my long-delayed interest in The Master of The Tower of Reading was revived when my old friend <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/celebrating-dai-qing-at-eighty\/\">Dai Qing<\/a> suddenly got in touch from Changsha, Hunan province. She was visiting Zhong Shuhe in hospital, where he was recovering from a stroke and she told me that my name had come up in conversation. Dai, never one to prevaricate, immediately sent me some photos of the two of them together (and another with Zhu Zheng). Shuhe also instructed his assistant to scan some of the letters that I had written to him after our first meeting in 1981. I mentioned how much I admired <em>Short Classical Texts<\/em> and so he asked Dai to send me the latest two-volume edition. Due to Covid restrictions, it took over a year for the books to reach me. As soon as they did, thanks to the help of Wang Zhaohui in Beijing and her sister Wang Ziyin in Melbourne, I began planning <em>The Tower of Reading<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>With the encouragement of my old friend <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/duncan-campbell-archive\/\">Duncan Campbell<\/a>, my leading collaborator in this project, I am launching <em>The Tower of Reading\u00a0<\/em>on this first day of the 2024-2025 Year of the Dragon. It is dedicated to Zhong Shuhe and to Dai Qing. I am also taking this opportunity to celebrate the connection between Huang Yongyu, who introduced me to Zhong Shuhe in 1981, myself and Yang Jiang and Qian Zhongshu, both of whom played a role in my work as well as in that of Zhong Shuhe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0first series of <i>Short Classical Texts<\/i> appeared in the form of newspaper columns in 1991 under the title &#8216;studying short pieces [of prose]&#8217; \u5b78\u5176\u77ed <em>xu\u00e9 q\u00ed du\u01cen<\/em>. An initial collection was published in Hunan in 2002 and again in Anhui in 2004. An expanded edition in five short volumes was produced by Hunan Arts Publishing House in 2010. The series was reissued in 2018 in a two-volume set containing\u00a0530 chapters arranged under fifty-four headings.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Tower of Reading<\/em> in <em>China Heritage<\/em> uses the two-volume edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/item\/\u5ff5\u697c\u5b66\u77ed\/61422107\">\u5ff5\u6a13\u5b78\u77ed<\/a>\u00a0published by Yuelu Publishing House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ylss.cn\">\u5cb3\u9e93\u66f8\u793e<\/a>\u00a0in Changsha, Hunan province in 2020. The copy I use was a gift from Zhong Shuhe, signed on his sickbed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>Today, as we <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/embarking-upon-the-jiachen-year-of-the-dragon-\u7532\u8fb0\u9f8d\u5e74\/\">embark on the Year of the Dragon<\/a>, we are changing the masthead of <em>China Heritage<\/em>\u00a0so as to reflect the style and temper of <em>The Tower of Reading<\/em>. This photograph dates from around the time we first met in Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan, in the summer of 1981.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 1981, the artist <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/huang-yongyu-lee-yee-jimmy-lai\/\">Huang Yongyu \u9ec3\u6c38\u7389<\/a> wrote me a letter of introduction to Zhong Shuhe \u9418\u53d4\u6cb3. I had only recently met Yongyu, a noted artist, essayist and raconteur, at the apartment of Gladys and Yang Xianyi \u6768\u61b2\u76ca in Beijing. At the time I was working on a translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/the-art-of-survival-in-the-age-of-xi-jinping\/\"><em>Lost in the Crowd<\/em>\u00a0\u5e79\u6821\u516d\u8a18<\/a>, a\u00a0Cultural Revolution memoir by the translator and writer Yang Jiang \u694a\u7d73.\u00a0Yang and her husband, the academic Qian Zhongshu \u9322\u937e\u66f8, also encouraged me to meet Zhong Shuhe, a man who was fast gaining a reputation as an energetic and creative editor in the south. In turn, Zhong Shuhe introduced me to <a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/item\/\u6731\u6b63\/11694\">Zhu Zheng \u6731\u6b63<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from their formal employment, both men had only recently returned to public life after decades of political persecution. Zhong would play a role in helping China recuperate aspects of its forgotten history and lost culture and Zhu Zheng, apart from his work on \u00a0the literary paragon Lu Xun, went on to become the leading chronicler of the Anti-Rightist Campaign, the 1957 purge of the country&#8217;s intellectual and cultural life from which the People&#8217;s Republic has never recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Huang Yongyu was a proud native of Hunan and he took every opportunity to promote people, products and places in the province. He was enamoured by &#8216;Going Out to the World&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/item\/\u8d70\u5411\u4e16\u754c\u4e1b\u4e66\/2345809\">\u8d70\u5411\u4e16\u754c\u53e2\u66f8<\/a>, a series of books launched in 1980 edited by Zhong Shuhe. The volumes included accounts of the outside world and travel diaries written by late-Qing-dynasty officials, the stories of the first students to study in the West, essays and notes on Japan, Asia and Europe by diplomats, business people and travellers. Previously unknown to Chinese readers, these books offered a view of China and the world from the Tongzhi Restoration era of the 1860s, through the Self-strengthening Movement and the years of frustrated reform before the eventually collapse of China&#8217;s last imperial dynasty in 1911.<\/p>\n<p>Zhong&#8217;s selections were inspired and his timing flawless. In late 1978, China had disavowed the inward looking radicalism of the Mao-Liu decades (1949-1978) and the Communist Party launched reforms that in some respects were a revival and continuation of the failed restoration policies of the late Qing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[<em>Note<\/em>: For more on this, and the relationship between &#8216;dynastic revival&#8217; \u4e2d\u8208 <em>zh\u014dngx\u012bng<\/em>, the reforms of the Deng era and the revanchism of Xi Jinping, see <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/prelude-to-a-restoration-xi-jinping-deng-xiaoping-chen-yun-the-spectre-of-mao-zedong\/\">Prelude to a Restoration: Xi Jinping, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yun &amp; the Spectre of Mao Zedong<\/a>.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the years, the series\u00a0&#8216;Going Out to the World&#8217; swelled to dozens of volumes all of which were selected, edited and published by Zhong Shuhe. A landmark in contemporary Chinese publishing history, the series was also a constant reminder to readers \u2014 including academics, theorists and the politically engaged \u2014 of the circuitous way the country had travelled in its quest for &#8216;wealth and power&#8217;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[<em>Note<\/em>: See \u660e\u9d72\uff0c\u4e01\u8d85\u9038\uff0c \u845b\u84d3\u5152\uff0c<a href=\"https:\/\/m.thepaper.cn\/newsDetail_forward_19715740?from=\">\u8001\u5148\u751f\uff0c\u7de8\u8f2f\u9418\u53d4\u6cb3\uff1a\u4ed6\u5f15\u9818\u4e00\u4ee3\u4e2d\u570b\u4eba\u201c\u8d70\u5411\u4e16\u754c\u201d<\/a>\uff0c\u6f8e\u6e43\u65b0\u805e\uff0c2022\u5e749\u67082\u65e5.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My circle of friends in Beijing and Hong Kong were also enthusiastic about Zhong Shuhe&#8217;s work. Qian Zhongshu wrote a preface for the series and the editor Pan Jijiong \u6f58\u969b\u5770 in Hong Kong featured it in the arts pages of <em>Ta Kung Pao<\/em>, for which I wrote a regular column <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/academicians-and-archives\/geremie-r-barme\/in-chinese\/\">in Chinese<\/a>. Yang Xianyi, who was now finally enjoying some of the respect and authority as China&#8217;s leading English translator along with his wife Gladys Yang, was also interested in exploring the possibility of selecting some of Zhong&#8217;s books\u00a0for inclusion in Panda Books, a Penguin-like venture of translated titles published by the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Zhong Shuhe was also a key figure in the revival of Republican-era writers and works that had been banned and denounced for over three decades. As one of a number of tenacious editors who would help China rediscover the lost voices of moderation, sense and humanity silenced by the shrill slogans of revolution his work thus chimed with my own burgeoning\u00a0interests in the silenced voices of important cultural figures like Zhou Zuoren, Lin Yutang and Feng Zikai. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Artistic-Exile-Life-Zikai-1898-1975\/dp\/0520208323\"><em>An Artistic Exile: A Life of Feng Zikai (1895-1975)<\/em><\/a>, 2002.) In particular, Shuhe championed the case of Zhou Zuoren, brother of Lu Xun, a leading modern essayist who has been cast aside because of his wartime collaboration with the Japanese occupation in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Today, in the second decade of <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/xi-jinpings-empire-of-tedium\/\"><em>Xi Jinping&#8217;s Empire of Tedium<\/em><\/a>, it is hard to recapture the excitement, curiosity and yearning for discovery of the early 1980s. He was in hospital following a stroke and, for some reason they had ended up talking about me. Dai, who was always irrepressibly enthusiastic, immediately sent me a photo of them together. Shuhe also asked her to send me photos of some of my letters in his archive. More prosaically, \u5ff5\u6a13 <em>ni\u00e0n l\u00f3u<\/em>\u00a0simply means &#8216;the twentieth floor&#8217;. In English we have chosen to call it &#8216;The Tower of Reading&#8217; and, following tradition, we think of Zhong Shuhe as\u00a0The Master of the Tower of Reading \u5ff5\u6a13\u4e3b\u4eba.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"box\"><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>On the Modern-day Creative Studio<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u9f4b <i>zh\u0101i<\/i>,\u00a0\u82b8\u7a97\u00a0<em>y\u00fan chu\u0101ng<\/em>,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u66f8\u9f4b <em>sh\u016b zh\u0101i<\/em>, \u66f8\u623f <em>sh\u016b f\u00e1ng<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s studio can have many forms, or none. At one extreme, at its most abstract, it can be the formless studio of the mind, the personal universe that surrounds the individual, furnished and imbued with that person&#8217;s favourite words, images, tunes, fabrics, vibrating with their unique scent and aura. It can be present, or past, or both, or neither. We all create and recreate our own studios, every minute of every day. To a greater or lesser extent, we may share them, or we may lock ourselves away, maintaining them as bastions of privacy in an increasingly public world. We open and close the studio doors. These studios are an extrusion of our selves; they are of us, but do not belong to us. As Liang Shiqiu remarked, &#8216;I don&#8217;t own my cottage; I am merely one of its tenants.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s studio, and the constantly shifting heritage of those scholar&#8217;s studios of old, may be something as banal as a laptop computer, that most versatile of modern mobile studios, seated at which the writer feels at home and creates home (wherever or whatever that may be). A less electronically-minded individual, like the peripatetic Hong Kong writer Leung Ping-kwan \u6881\u79c9\u541b (a present-day practitioner of the perennial art of <i>biji wenxue<\/i> [\u7b46\u8a18\u6587\u5b78]), carts his personal studio around with him more literally in a rucksack, like a snail&#8217;s shell, trundling bundles of unfinished manuscripts and unanswered letters from port to port (and often losing them during his explorations, in particular in such unreliable ports as Marseille!), resting from time to time to scribble a post-card or two in a makeshift studio\/caf\u00e9 (for example, in a Prague sidestreet, which then becomes an intrinsic part of the literary product, &#8216;Postcards from Prague&#8217;), or pausing in some bar down a dark alley to catch breath, to celebrate the moment with a motley group of friends in this their temporary home.<\/p>\n<p>His is a genuine perpetuation of the timeless and quintessentially Chinese (but strangely universal) world of the studio-picnic, the meeting of true and like minds, the sharing of hard-won identities, the celebration of a fragile community, fighting off the dark, struggling to conjure away the ever encroaching barbarism of our age with a few poignant phrases.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s late at night now. Outside the streets are empty and desolate. But we can still sit here, we can still linger awhile amid the lights and voices, drunk on the illusion of this warm and joyous moment. In total, I selected 530 short classical texts of under 100 characters each, drawing material from the pre-Qin era [before the second century BCE] right up to the early years of the Republic in the twentieth century. My selection was eclectic and I included passages from the Confucian classics, traditional histories, bureaucratic documents right up to works of fiction, miscellaneous writings as well as epistles and diaries. I thought of my audience as including anyone who is interested in reading accessible classical texts as well as those who want to hone their own writing skills. All descendants of the Yellow Emperor have the right to read and to write, that even includes a duty to express themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The criterion I&#8217;ve applied to selecting\u00a0<i>Classical Texts from The Tower of Reading <\/i>was that the selections had to be succinct and well written. Brevity itself makes them even more easy to read [\u5ff5 <em>ni\u00e0n<\/em>], or for that matter to recite out loud [\u5538 <em>ni\u00e0n<\/em>]. Their charms are self-evident, moreover they have passed the test of time and will continue to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The inscription on an ancient tripod, Confucius on the subject of ceaseless change, Liu Bang&#8217;s Three Stipulations, Qian Liu&#8217;s plea to his wife \u2014 they are all famous works that people have committed to memory and recited through the ages. They have also all played a role in the social life of their times. Delving deep into the world of classical Chinese letters, Zhong compiled a volume of short, accessible texts for the education, and entertainment, of his grandchildren. He likened his meandering through the vast corpus of the past and his composition of explanatory essays to the writer Lu Xun&#8217;s efforts to distract himself from the dire political situation of his own day. In the 1910s, Yuan Shikai, president of the Republic of China and a military strongman, had thrown the nation into chaos when he declared himself founding emperor of a new dynasty.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Lu Xun, the pen name of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lu_Xun\">Zhou Shuren (\u5468\u6a39\u4eba, 1881-1936)<\/a>, was working for the Ministry of Education and was lodging at the\u00a0Shaoxing prefectural guild hall in the capital. As Yuan pursued his imperial plans, government agents scoured the city identifying and arresting opponents to what was widely regarded as a betrayal of the republican revolution of 1911. To avoid suspicion, Lu Xun let it be known that in his spare time he was focussing on collecting and studying <a href=\"https:\/\/ads.wenxuecity.com\/book\/?act=view&amp;chapterID=1590219&amp;bookID=246136\">rubbings of the inscriptions on old stone stelae.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later celebrated for his contributions to epigraphy, Lu Xun surreptitiously continued to pursue his interest in contemporary culture and politics. As he copied out the texts on ancient stelae, he composed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marxists.org\/archive\/lu-xun\/1918\/04\/x01.htm\">Diary of a Madman<\/a>, which is regarded as China&#8217;s first and most famous modern short story.<\/p>\n<p>The significance of Zhong Shuhe&#8217;s reference to Lu Xun was unmistakable. As he put it in Preface Six to his book, dated 10 June 2006: \u6284\u9304\u77ed\u6587\u52a0\u4ee5\u4ecb\u7d39\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\uff0c\u4e8b\u5be6\u4e0a\u662f\u5f9e\u4e00\u4e5d\u516b\u4e5d\u5e74\u590f\u5929\u958b\u59cb\u7684\uff0c\u8aaa\u662f\u70ba\u4e86\u8ab2\u5b6b\uff0c\u5176\u5be6\u4e5f\u6709\u4e00\u9ede\u5b78\u5468\u6a39\u4eba\u8eb2\u9032\u7d39\u8208\u7e23\u9928\u6284\u53e4\u7891\u7684\u610f\u601d\u3002<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In the blink of an eye, two decades have passed,&#8217; Zhong went on to say. &#8216;When I started this project I was approaching my sixth decade, now I&#8217;m nearly in my eighth.&#8217; \u4e00\u7728\u773c\u4e8c\u5341\u5e74\u904e\u53bb\uff0c\u6211\u5df2\u5f9e\u300c\u671b\u516d\u300d\u9032\u800c\u300c\u671b\u516b\u300d\u3002He wistfully adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;I will not live to see the Yellow River run clear and my heart swells with emotion&#8217; \u4fdf\u6cb3\u4e4b\u6e05, \u4eba\u58fd\u5e7e\u4f55\uff0c\u771f\u4e0d\u7981\u611f\u6168\u7cfb\u4e4b\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is to say, he held out no hope that there would be any significant political change in China in his lifetime. Now, in the first half of the 2020s, Zhong Shuhe is in his nineties and Xi Jinping has only just embarked on his second decade in office.<\/p>\n<p>In regard to how his project had evolved so that he felt free to extemporise on contemporary Chinese life,\u00a0Shuhe tells us in <em>Preface Six<\/em>, dated 10 June 2009, that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I conceived of this series as a way to introduce readers to short classical texts. However, over time, my own explanations and elaborations on the topics at hand grew in length; they outgrew the succinct originals and ended up taking up most of the space of each entry. Nonetheless, I would observe that at best I&#8217;d give my contributions \u2014 written with all due sincerity though they may be \u2014 a score of 60 out of 100.\u300a\u5ff5\u6a13\u5b78\u77ed\u300b\u7684\u672c\u610f\uff0c\u7576\u7136\u662f\u70ba\u4e86\u5411\u53e4\u4eba\u5b78\u77ed\uff0c\u4f46\u5beb\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5c31\u984c\u767c\u63ee\u6216\u501f\u984c\u767c\u63ee\u7684\u6210\u5206\u8d8a\u4f86\u8d8a\u591a\uff0c\u5f88\u5927\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u90fd\u6210\u4e86\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6587\u7ae0\u3002\u6211\u7684\u6587\u7ae0\u9802\u591a\u80fd\u6253\u516d\u5341\u5206\uff0c\u4f46\u610f\u601d\u7e3d\u662f\u8aa0\u5be6\u7684\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the introduction to selections from\u00a0<em>The Tower of Reading<\/em>\u00a0that had previously been published in the Beijing press, Shuhe had written that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even if my own additions are not particularly outstanding, at least they are relatively short. It saved time and energy for all concerned and I thought that was a beneficial contribution.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He went on to say, &#8216;I was being quite sincere because I really don&#8217;t think that I am a particularly good writer. I was always worried about rabbiting on unnecessarily.&#8217; After all, he continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since I advertised the series as being aimed at \u2018Studying Short Classical Texts\u2019,\u00a0I couldn&#8217;t very well betray my own brief. Even if that meant that I&#8217;d make less money out of the venture, at least I spared myself the kind of ridicule suffered by Old Lady Wang and her bound feet [the foot bindings of which were notoriously &#8216;smelly and too long&#8217;].<\/p>\n<p>\u300a\u5b78\u5176\u77ed\u300b\u5e7e\u5e74\u524d\u5728\u5317\u4eac\u5831\u7d19\u4e0a\u958b\u5c08\u6b04\u6642\uff0c\u5e8f\u8a00\u4e2d\u8aaa\uff1a\u300c\u5373\u4f7f\u5beb\u4e0d\u597d\uff0c\u4e5f\u53ef\u4ee5\u77ed\u4e00\u4e9b\uff0c\u5f7c\u6b64\u7701\u6642\u7701\u529b\uff0c\u529f\u5fb7\u7121\u91cf\u3002\u300d\u9019\u7576\u7136\u662f\u6709\u611f\u800c\u767c\u3002\u56e0\u70ba\u81ea\u5df1\u5beb\u4e0d\u597d\u6587\u7ae0\uff0c\u7e3d\u5acc\u56c9\u5506\u62d6\u6c93\uff0c\u65e2\u7136\u8981\u4f86\u300c\u5b78\u5176\u77ed\u300d\uff0c\u4fbf\u4e0d\u80fd\u4e0d\u529b\u6c42\u5176\u77ed\uff0c\u9019\u6a23\u7a3f\u8cbb\u55ae\u4e0a\u7684\u6578\u4f4d\u96d6\u7136\u4e5f\u77ed\uff0c\u5eb6\u53ef\u514d\u738b\u5a46\u5a46\u88f9\u8173\u5e03\u4e4b\u8b4f\u7109\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014 <em>from <\/em>Preface Two<em>, 10 December 1998<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <em>Preface Three<\/em>, dated 11 June 2001, Shuhe muses that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;Studying Short Classical Texts&#8217; is something that the literati regard as being beneath contempt and which academics also find distasteful. I, however, have found great satisfaction in this undertaking. I lack the talent required to write at length; anyway, I&#8217;m generally put off by those pretentious works that deal with topics deemed to be &#8216;so important that length is no object&#8217;. Brevity was at least my original aim although over time I&#8217;ve come to realise that whether reading a text or evaluating a person, the same standards apply. Height and looks are not that important; attraction lies in the depth of thought, the substance of the individual and their general conviviality.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, I selected these classical texts with an eye to giving my granddaughters something to read. At university, however, none of them pursued the humanities. So, I&#8217;m no longer providing a service to anyone in particular, nor am I all that interested in translating short excerpts from classical texts into modern Chinese. That&#8217;s why I decided to add new wine of my own to these very old bottles [in the form of short expository essays]. Rather, I would observe that that my new wine is very much the same wine of the ancients, and it is still faithfully contained in their original bottles. What is different is that in my &#8216;Tower of Reading\u2019 is that, apart from my \u2018reading\u2019 of the texts [in the form of \u5ff5\u6a13\u8b80], I also comment on them [in essays in the form of \u5ff5\u6a13\u66f0].<\/p>\n<p>I derive considerable pleasure from what I do or, as <a href=\"https:\/\/so.gushiwen.cn\/mingju\/juv_e4c27045d6f1.aspx\">Tao Hongjing put it<\/a> long ago: &#8216;Would that I could share with you my delight in watching the scudding clouds&#8217;. I should hesitate to extrapolate [on the themes of the selected texts] too liberally, but once I get going it is hard to rein myself in.<\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u5c0d\u65bc\u53e4\u6587\u4eca\u8b6f\u9019\u985e\u4e8b\u60c5\u5176\u5be6\u4e26\u7121\u591a\u5927\u8208\u8da3\uff0c\u65bc\u662f\u4fbf\u6c7a\u5b9a\u5728\u820a\u74f6\u4e2d\u88dd\u4e00\u9ede\u65b0\u9152\u3002\u2014\u2014\u4e0d\uff0c\u9152\u9084\u61c9\u8a72\u8aaa\u662f\u53e4\u4eba\u7684\u9152\uff0c\u4ecd\u7136\u4e00\u6ef4\u4e0d\u6f0f\u5730\u88dd\u5728\u9019\u88e1\uff1b\u4e0d\u904e\u5beb\u660e\u300c\u5ff5\u6a13\u300d\u7684\u74f6\u5b50\u91cc\uff0c\u537b\u7531\u6211\u647b\u9032\u53bb\u4e86\u4e0d\u5c11\u7684\u6c34\uff0c\u7528\u4f86\u6f86\u81ea\u5df1\u80f8\u4e2d\u7684\u58d8\u584a\u4e86\uff0c\u5373\u6a19\u8b58\u70ba\u300c\u5ff5\u6a13\u8b80\u300d\u5c24\u5176\u662f\u300c\u5ff5\u6a13\u66f0\u300d\u7684\u6587\u5b57\u662f\u4e5f\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u9019\u6b63\u50cf\u9676\u5f18\u666f\u6240\u8aaa\u7684\uff0c\u300c\u53ea\u53ef\u81ea\u6021\u6085\uff0c\u4e0d\u582a\u6301\u8d08\u541b\u300d\u3002\u501f\u984c\u767c\u63ee\u96d6\u7136\u4e0d\u5927\u6562\uff0c\u4f46\u7bad\u5728\u5f26\u4e0a\u4e0d\u5f97\u4e0d\u767c\u6642\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u4e5f\u6703\u4f86\u90a3\u9ebc\u5169\u4e0b\u5427\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, as he says in <em>Preface Five<\/em>, dated New Year&#8217;s Day 2004:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;Translating classical texts into modern Chinese&#8217; is not the main appeal of this undertaking. It is being able to write about how I respond to those texts. The hundreds of texts that I have selected for this series provide a pretext for my reflections. In an age of prosperity such as ours there is, theoretically at least, no good reason to find a pretext to indulge one&#8217;s musings. However, the desire to slake one&#8217;s thirst with the spirits of the ancients is surely something that not even the most saintly can ignore.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, since it\u2019s about &#8216;studying short pieces of prose&#8217;, and since\u00a0I&#8217;m mindful of the reader, I do my best not to mis-read these texts, or at least not to misconstrue them too much. Fidelity is a constant concern, although I must admit that there are cases when, for example, I might find it hard to avoid translating a dynastic-era term like &#8216;being exiled from the court&#8217; [\u8cb6\u8b2b] as &#8216;being sent down to the countryside&#8217; [\u4e0b\u653e]. People have pointed out to me that &#8216;to be exiled from the court&#8217; was one way that the authoritarians of the past punished men of talent, while being &#8216;sent down&#8217; by the Communist Party and the People&#8217;s Government was a positive policy aimed at training cadres. It is, therefore, inappropriate to equate the two. But, as I see it, in both cases people who had been at the top were sent to the bottom, moved from the centre out to the periphery. The only difference was that there was no way a person could disobey an imperial command and they meekly submitted to their exile while those &#8216;sent down&#8217; in the modern era were packed off amidst the clamorous beating of drums and gongs with big red paper flowers pinned to their chests.
