Along with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/category\/journal\/essays\/\"><em>China Heritage Journal<\/em><\/a>\u00a0it is a successor to\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/Chinaheritagequarterly.org\">China Heritage Quarterly<\/a><\/i>, an e-publication\u00a0produced\u00a0under the aegis of the China Heritage Project from 2005 to 2012.<\/p>\n<p><em>China Heritage Annual<\/em>\u00a0was launched at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.m-restaurantgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/FINAL2017PROGRAM.pdf\">2017 Shanghai International Literary Festival<\/a>\u00a0at M on the Bund on 14 March 2017. I am\u00a0grateful to Michelle Garnaut, creator and organiser of the festival, for her\u00a0support for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\"><em>China Heritage<\/em><\/a>\u00a0today, and for\u00a0<em>China Heritage Quarterly<\/em>\u00a0in the past. I would also like to thank the Royal Geographical Society Hong Kong for inviting me to address the Society on the 13th March, which in turn made it possible for me to travel to Shanghai. (See also &#8216;\u95d4 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/a-valentine-for-m-on-the-bund\/\">A Valentine for M on the Bund&#8217;<\/a>, 14 February 2022.)<\/p>\n<p>Over the years,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinaheritagequarterly.org\"><em>China Heritage Quarterly<\/em><\/a>\u00a0published issues focussed on a number of cities, their history, politics and culture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/chinaheritagequarterly.org\/editorial.php?issue=014\">Beijing<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinaheritagequarterly.org\/editorial.php?issue=022\">Shanghai<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinaheritagequarterly.org\/editorial.php?issue=021\">Tianjin<\/a>;\u00a0and,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinaheritagequarterly.org\/editorial.php?issue=028\">Hangzhou\/ West Lake<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The inaugural issue of\u00a0<em>China Heritage Annual<\/em> was devoted to the city of Nanking. From 2018,\u00a0<em>China Heritage Annual<\/em> has been incorporated into\u00a0<em>China\u00a0<\/em><i>Heritage\u00a0<\/i>with essays and translations of the annual theme published through the year. In tracing the history, political vicissitudes, cultural significance and heritage of Nanking from the earliest times, this issue of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/annual\/2017\/about-annual\/\"><em>China\u00a0Heritage Annual<\/em><\/a> has been developed with the collaboration and contributions of our Guest Editor William Sima and contributions from Yayun Zhu \u6731\u4e9e\u96f2.<\/p>\n<p>The design and basic contents of<em> China Heritage\u00a0Annual<\/em> were finalised\u00a0prior to the formal launch\u00a0at the Shanghai International Writer&#8217;s Festival on 14 March 2017.\u00a0The\u00a0<em>Annual\u00a0<\/em>offers an overall Chronology of Nanking, as well as essays, academic studies and art work related to the place over time, organised by era (dynastic and non-dynastic). In many sections, be they about the dynastic past, the Chinese Republic or the People&#8217;s Republic, material is organised thematically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>As is the case in regard to\u00a0<em>China Heritage<\/em>\u00a0as a whole, our approach is that of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/journal\/on-new-sinology\/\">New Sinology<\/a>, one that focusses on the conjunction\u00a0between the Chinese and Sinophone worlds and which investigates the disparate strands of traditional Chinese writing and scholarship, \u6f22\u5b78, the Western (and Japanese) engagement with China since the late Ming, while remaining mindful of the complex and contentious histories of the Chinese world since the late-Qing period up to the modern day.<\/p>\n<p>In pursuing New Sinology, we emphasise the importance of Chinese culture in its broadest sense, one that incorporates elite and demotic traditions, the written heritage as well as thought, politics and society.<\/p>\n<p>New Sinology recognises the gravitational pull of Official China and celebrates Other Chinas as both in the twenty-first century are integral to Global China, in reality a\u00a0Sinophone\u00a0realm\u00a0that for centuries has been part of the ebb and flow of ideas, things\u00a0and people beyond formal borders and way stations, be they political, economic, academic or journalistic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5057\" style=\"width: 732px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5057\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/\u9759\u5b81\u7ec7\u9020\u5e9c\u66f9\u5e9c\u620f\u82d1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"732\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/\u9759\u5b81\u7ec7\u9020\u5e9c\u66f9\u5e9c\u620f\u82d1.png 732w, https:\/\/chinaheritage.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/\u9759\u5b81\u7ec7\u9020\u5e9c\u66f9\u5e9c\u620f\u82d1-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Jiangning Imperial Silk Manufacturing Museum <a href=\"https:\/\/zh.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/\u5357\u4eac\u6c5f\u5b81\u7ec7\u9020\u535a\u7269\u9986\">\u6c5f\u5be7\u7e54\u9020\u5e9c\u535a\u7269\u9928<\/a> opened on 1 May 2013.
